Qiuruiyan Shen
I am a product and furniture designer who values hands-on making as well as digital tooling. The core drivers of my design are physical experimentations and the digital fabrication process. My design ranges from large-scale products, such as furniture, to smaller-scale products, including electronics, packaging, and everyday items. I have strong interests in how materials, structure, and fabrication can shape the identity of objects. I am also passionate about exploring and investigating new materials and innovative fabrication methods, to seek new opportunities in how material properties and manufacturing methods can shape design.
My ideation starts with exploration of new materials, techniques, and manufacturing processes, through making, testing, and repeated iterations to shape my final design. I often actively look for opportunities in new things I have not explored before, to expand my knowledge of design while understanding material properties, behaviours, and limitations. In my Unit 9 project, I adopted a design thinking called Material Driven Design (MDD), in which concepts and design direction are directly derived from material explorations. Through varied testing methods and fabrication experiments, ideas develop based on what materials reveal through the process.
My practice is led by sustainability, material-driven, and product-wise direction, focusing on using local and low-impact materials. I am particularly interested in experimental materials and in applying them appropriately and practically in real-world settings.
